WAND's mission is to empower women to act politically to reduce violence and militarism, and redirect excessive military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs.

Who We Are

Internships with WAND/WiLL

The internship program at WAND/WiLL is a great way for students to learn about the legislative system and gain experience in furthering a progressive agenda to influence policy. WAND/WiLL offers summer, semester, and year-round internship positions requiring a minimum weekly commitment of nine hours, though three to five days a week is preferred.

Interested students should send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to the address below. A writing sample of two to five pages is essential in the consideration of intern positions due to the large amount of writing required by interns.

Intern Duties: Interns attend weekly meetings of groups in the peace, women's and environmental communities. Interns communicate by phone and mail with grassroots and women legislators membership across the country, with the Arlington office and with National WAND chapters. They update the membership database, research pertinent WAND issues, write about and analyze federal and state legislation, as well as do general clerical work and administrative support.

Internship Program: With a program that has existed for over five years, WAND values their interns. It depends upon intern support, and has one or two interns at a time working with the two staff members in the office. Interns work on one or more of WAND's five projects: WAND and WiLL Actions, WAND Bulletins, Lobbying Congress, Coalition Building, and/or WAND PAC activities.

Office environment: WAND's office is located on Capitol Hill between the Supreme Court and the Senate Office Buildings. The comfortable office space is adequate for the small staff and generously accommodates for the intern(s).

Compensation: Stipend; great experience/exposure to the nonprofit women's peace communities.

Qualifications: Must be enthusiastic, efficient, independent, and be flexible and willing to work on different projects. Strong verbal and written communications skills and research ability are needed. Interns should also have a commitment to the goal of women organizing for new directions for American domestic and military policy. Strong computer and internet skills are a plus.

Comment: The staff is friendly and supportive giving the intern room to create well-defined goals. Individual attention is given to ensure interns have substantive experience.

To apply: Send cover letter, resume, and writing sample to Darcy Scott Martin, WAND/WiLL Washington Director.
